Masonic Apron

This is all I have left from this old masonic apron. I pulled off the rosettes and used them long ago but the fragile sky blue fabric is working its way in to a new collage. The masonic apron is the badge of membership for the masons and I believe that this colour and the rosettes signify that someone has become a master mason.

Exhibition round up

Today I have been catching up with exhibitions locally in the North East.
First up Katharine Morling's ceramic sculptures at the Shipley Art Gallery.

Then on to Gateshead Library Gallery to see an exhibition of work produced by artists living in Bill Quay. One of my favourite places in Gateshead and the city farm was much visited when my children were little. This screen print was produced by my friend Clare Satow who lives there and run Bill Quay Fabric Workshop

Then on to The Customs House in South Shields to see an excellent exhibition about illustrative and stitched drawing. I have a couple of pieces of work in this show. Some lovely stitched drawings by stitched artists including Louise Sambrook Underwood who had embroidered a great portrait of Wilfred Owen, Reiko Koga and Sharmistha Kar . If you live in the North east and are a stitcher then you need to go and see this.

Panorama

I have been experimenting with the panorama setting on my camera. I don't think I am very good at it but it is helpful to be able to take a picture of something quite long. This is an old piece of work found while tidying a cupboard. I made it after a Janet Bolton workshop and I strongly acknowledge herinfluence!

I  have just delivered work to The Customs House in South Shields. The exhibition is described below. My stitched drawings are my own designs but taken from years of looking at crewel work designs and old embroidery transfers. They incorporate pieces of the original transfers and my own drawing within the backgrounds.

Illustrative & Stitched Drawings
Various Artists

28 November 2015 – 10 January 2016

Featuring the work of illustrators and artists working with stitch, this exhibition explores the role of drawing in their practice - challenging traditional perceptions of ‘what is drawing’ and the ‘finished’ product within illustration and textiles. The exhibition includes work by regional, national and international artists, including: Ailish Henderson, Alice Pattullo, Alma Vescovi, Bethan Laker, Claudia Sacher, Esen Kaya, Gaynor Devaney, Helen Edling, Louise Edwards, Mandy Pattullo, Manuela Adreani, Melodie Stacey, Rieko Koga, Sharmistha Kar, Sue Stone, Tracey Long and Viv Sliwka.

Leporello

A concertina book I am making. It seems to have been foggy and dark all week so this is the best I can do with the photography!

Fall

Autumn is truly with us now and the valley across from my studio is a patchwork of colour. Here is a  rather ugly textile illustration of Autumn  but the back of the piece is really interesting!

Pride (and prejudiced)

Yes I am prejudiced! My daughter has just illustrated a new version of "Pride and Prejudice " and I am unashamedly plugging it. It has just been published costs £15 and is a lavishly illustrated hard back so a bargain and great gift for Christmas. Here are just a few of my favourite pictures. My personal favourite is the muddy dress hem.

Stitch Retreat

I have just returned from teaching a long weekend Stitch Retreat at Stoke Rochford Hall near Grantham. The theme was Precious Memories and the students worked really hard to produce a variety of pieces based on different techniques. I have put 20 photographs on to my Facebook page HERE if you want to have a look at what they achieved. You don't have to request to be my friend through Facebook to see them as this is my business page. I often post different things there from this blog so if you want to follow that too then tick "like" on the top of the Mandy Pattullo Textile Artist page.
For more about the other Stitch Retreats planned visit their web site HERE

Limited time and ingredients

I am busy, busy, busy at the moment  teaching 2 or 3 workshops every week, looking after elderly parents, writing a book, and even fitting in a part time job. Thats my excuse for not posting for a while! I have been returning to book forms though and here are 5 pages from a new book. My ingredients were limited to a Turkey red and the torn edge of a piece of hexagon patchwork . These are the collages that have emerged…..
